Nighttime kayaking in the Back Bay

As I mentioned previously, we were pretty devastated to say goodbye to Mike & AM after so many adventures and laughs. Thankfully, our heartache was short lived as our good pals Jen & Mike had invited us to go nighttime kayaking with them around the Back Bay area of Newport Beach.

It’s a tour run by the Newport Aquatic Centre and it is so worthwhile! I stupidly forgot my camera which I am very upset about because the views along the way were unbelievable.

We hit the water at about 7pm on a Saturday night in the huge Hawaiian canoes. We then spent the entire evening paddling up to Balboa Island where we got out to enjoy a frozen banana (delicious) and a drink at the Village Inn (favourite bar in OC for sure!) before paddling back.

The views along the way are largely of amazing Orange County houses. Seriously you have never seen homes like these. And lets not forget that it is almost Halloween so the decorations were also a sight to behold! Yowsers. Talk about fancy.

The paddle was also filled with lots of laughs as our paddle leader (captain? I have no idea what she should be called …) re-used the same joke consistently which involved pointed at a large yacht outside a big house and asking Mike if that was his brothers boat. Don’t get it? Good. We didn’t either. Yet she thought it was hilarious. Which we found entertaining.

There was only 1 minor mishaps when we paddled clean into a concrete bridge but that aside, the evening was glorious!

Oh and I must also mention that Joep and I had our first ever vegan meal! I’m not gonna lie to you. We were feeling pretty apprehensive about it given that we love eating animals and all the things that come from them however we were pleasantly surprised!! Turns out you can still enjoy eating when it doesn’t involve animals! I know! I’m as shocked as anyone about this.

So, whilst goodbyes do seriously suck, we are lucky to have made some pretty wonderful pals here to hang with making our OC life pretty sweet as well … oh how we dread saying goodbye again …
