A Roman Holiday - The Honeymoon Extravaganza Continues

Ahhh Italy. Joep & I often tell people how much we love Italy. The food, the wine, the architecture, the people … yet we’ve never actually vacationed in Italy together. Go figure! We had originally tossed up the idea of spending a few weeks in Italy for our honeymoon alas we were not in the mood for a winter honeymoon so a few weeks in Italy was converted to a month in Africa … followed by a month in Argentina … what?

Still, we were lucky enough (??) to have a 10 hour stopover in Rome on our way from Amsterdam to Buenos Aires. Most of the time I hate long stopovers but in this case it was glorious. Our bags were checked the whole way through so when we landed in Rome we simply took our hand luggage, hopped on the train to the city centre and enjoyed a day in Rome!

As I mentioned earlier, 5 days in Amsterdam left us completely and totally wrecked. In fact, when the alarm went off to get us to the airport on time I was tempted to sleep through it and just pay the extra to get a flight the following day. Joep was more enthusiastic than I was (and appears to need significantly less sleep than I do) so sleeping through was no option.

I’m very glad that this was the case! Upon arrival in Rome I remembered just how awesome Rome is. We set ourselves up at a little restaurant near the Spanish Steps and settled in for 3 hours of eating and drinking. You thought we’d be full by now right? Or that we wouldn’t want more wine eh? Wrong! We had room for both. It was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Good conversation, good food, good wine and an amazing location was enough to perk us both up and gave us enough energy to head off on a mini tour of Rome. Joep was gasping and oohing and aahing at every corner. Its longer since he has been there than me so he had forgotten how awesome Rome is more than I have.

I could rant and rave for hours about the buildings we visited, the streets we walked and the snacks we ate – Alas, I still have a month of Argentina travels to blog about so I shall keep this one short.

After thoroughly enjoying a mini Roman holiday we hopped back on the train late in the evening and headed to the airport where our flight to Buenos Aires awaited us … A whole month more vacation!

Life is simply wonderful right now!
