As I mentioned in my earlier blog, Joep & I are back to living apart during the week and spending only weekends together. Whilst we miss each other a lot during the week, we are not finding this situation too miserable. I mean, we still have every weekend together AND we get to hang out in one of the world’s most beautiful spots … Orange County, California.
This weekend it was my turn to make the commute. I hopped on a 4:30pm flight to SoCal and after a bit of a delay in Toronto, made it to LAX on Friday evening where I was met by the Joepinator before we headed down to Laguna!
After a relaxed Friday night we were up early Saturday morning for breakfast before heading down for a walk on the beach. Heaven. Pure heaven. We walked from our hotel up to the town where I settled in for a bit of book reading time and Joep played ball with some of the locals on the courts at the beach. It was so relaxing!
After a couple of hours I looked up and realized that Joep was not on the basketball court any more. Hmmmm … I looked around for a while until a basketball rolled up beside me. Turning around I saw Joep wading into the ocean fully clothed and very agitated. I had no idea what was up. I walked down to the water’s edge to see if everything was ok and heard Joep shouting in frustration ‘I can’t get it off! I can’t get it off Jenni!!’ … while shouting this he was grabbing his foot, waving his arms, shaking his legs and convulsing in general. I’d like to say I was supportive and calm here but it was too entertaining. I lost it laughing. He looked like a dog that had chewing gum stuck on his paws, or a bear with honey all over it … so frazzled and not able to fix it. Bless.

After some coaxing I managed to get the Joepinator out of the water so I could see what was wrong. At some stage during his basketball activities, Joep had managed to step in tar. I have no idea how this happened. There was a big chunk of black tar on the bottom of his foot. When he tried to get it off his foot it got onto his hand. So then he rubbed his hand on his other hand and … you guessed it, the other hand got tarred as well. Then he rubbed his arm and … well I think you get the picture. The funniest thing about the whole situation was how stressed and irritated Joep was by it. Most people would just decide that it is now time to leave and get cleaned up. Joepinator wanders into the ocean and convulses. Classic.

Feeling sufficiently warmed up we eventually headed back to the town for a delicious lunch at the Sundried Tomato sitting outside, taking in the sights and sounds of Laguna and enjoying some fantastic food. Lunch was followed by a few drinks on the beach where we were joined by Joep’s old boss for a chat. He was then kind enough to drop us back to our hotel. Too funny, he was recommending a restaurant for us to eat at for dinner and noted that it was way too far to walk to … we asked where it was. Turns out it was closer to the town than our hotel is! Clearly we are not true American’s. Using our legs takes precedence over driving whenever possible. I hope this never changes.
Back at the hotel we had a quick kip before heading out for a late dinner at a nearby spot. We were so chilled out and as a result ended up falling into bed before midnight.
Sunday was pretty much a repeat of Saturday. We got up, walked along the beach to the town, Joep played basketball while I read my book. There was no tarring on Sunday so we were able to stay in the town. We headed to a bar around midday to watch the Lakers game (booooo … I will never support the Laker’s even if we are living in California. Fact.). After ordering our first drinks Joep turned to me and asked if I had brought the wallet. I said that of course I hadn’t, he had taken responsibility for packing the bag. In fact, less than 24 hours earlier Joep told me that I organize everything too much and never give him a chance to organize anything so I had consciously not quizzed him when we left the hotel to ensure we had everything with us. Lesson learned. We had no wallet with us. Aykarumba. This is why I plan everything.
We then debated how best to rectify this situation. In the end I insisted that I walk back to the hotel to get the wallet because I was a bit annoyed and the walk would do me good. As I walked along at warp speed Joep rang to tell me he was in a taxi on his way to meet me because he felt bad that I was walking back. When the taxi pulled up both Joep and the taxi driver were grinning at me. I didn’t understand. When I got into the taxi Joep announces to me that the taxi driver thinks I have a very angry walk. And the two of them proceed to dissolve into fits of laughter. To clarify I asked Joep ‘Does the taxi driver think I have an angry walk or did you tell the taxi driver I have an angry walk?’ Joep’s response: ‘I may have given him some encouragement.’ Sure you did. Either way it ended up being a pretty entertaining drive and when we eventually got the wallet we headed back to the town to enjoy an afternoon sushi fest with Matt & Tiare (Joep’s colleague and his fiancĂ©).

The afternoon was lovely but all good things must come to an end and I had to pack to head home again so we said our goodbyes in the late afternoon. Joep & I then had a few hours of chilling out at the hotel before he drove me to the airport where I caught the overnight flight back to Ottawa in time for work on Monday morning. Sigh.
It was a glorious weekend! We’re so looking forward to the many more weekends we’ll be having just like this one!
